definition for costume or fashion jewellery and Cubic zirconia
(CZ): Cubic zirconia (or CZ), is a mineral that is widely synthesized for use as a diamond simulant. The synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colorless, but may be made in a variety of different colors. It should not be confused with zircon. Because of its durability, and close visual likeness to diamond, synthetic cubic zirconia has remained the most gemologically and economically important diamond simulant. Cubic zirconia is so optically close to diamond that only a
trained eye can differentiate the two under the microscope or loupe. Originally, costume or fashion jewellery
was made of inexpensive simulated gemstones, such as rhinestones or lucite, set in pewter. Modern
costume jewelry incorporates a wide range of
materials. High end crystals, CZs or cubic zirconia simulated diamonds, and some semi-precious stones
are used in place of precious stones. Metals include gold- or silver-plated
brass, and sometimes vermeil or sterling silver. |
